I don’t think that would be a good compromise, to just have NO Bishops to help the society with sacraments. Because……all they have to do is say, keep doing what you’re doing, we do not permit you to ordain new bishops but we will allow other bishops to help with your sacraments. Then the SSPX bishops die and now we are in the same place as FSSP. Absolutely not. Not to mention, the life long SSPX’ers would object to this, not just the Marian corp. To me, it would defeat the whole reason why Archbishop ordained his own Bishops, to secure the livelihood of their order. Not to mention we would lose the Archbishop Lefebvre line of Bishops. The only way forward will be to grant the society the right to ordain and leave them be. Basically…..a miracle. We can hope.

I'll be happy if he simply ignores all of his predecessor's anti-traditionalist orders.

This is why the SSPX should have nothing to do with Novus Ordo bishops ordaining their seminarians to the priesthood (not even the well intentioned Bp. Schneider)

A letter from ++Lefebvre (i.e. 1988) to a layman (Mr. Wilson, a lay attendee of the SSPX) in response to Mr. Wilson’s query regarding the validity of Novus Ordo Sacraments.

“ Econe, 28 oct. 1988

Very dear Mr. Wilson,

thank you very much for your kind letter. I agree with your desire to reordain conditionnaly these priests, and I have done this reordination many times.

All sacraments from the modernists bishops or priests are doubtfull now. The changes are increasing and their intentions are no more catholic.

We are in the time of great apostasy.

We need more and more bishops and priests very catholics. It is necessary everywhere in the world.

Thank you for the newspaper article from the Father Alvaro Antonio Perez Jesuit!

We must pray and work hardly to extend the kingdom of Jesus-Christ.

I pray for you and your lovely family.

Devotly in Jesus and Mary.”

It’s all fine to have a N.O. Bishop ‘helping occasionally’ but the Society must stick to its guns and just insist that the Society needs Bishops from its own ranks! This is not even debatable.

Novus Ordo cannot make a SSPX bishop. Not sure I understand this statement.

Probably just means that with all that had been witnessed over the past 60 odd years and given the fact that P.F stacked the deck, so to speak, with Cardinals of his liking/mindset...

I think your instinct that Pope Leo does not want a controversy or spectacle at the beginning of his Pontificate, is correct. His messaging for unity and the necessity to preserve eastern liturgies is also a good sign.

I pray everyday for this rift to be over so we can all just receive the sacraments and go to mass as our ancestors did.

God bless you.

You sound reasonable, and if Leo really wants to continue on Francis' path (as he stated a few times) why wouldn't he allow more bishops to be consecrated? Francis, for all his faults, was generous with the SSPX. And Leo seems more reasonable and kinder than Francis; and I do believe he believes in his calling. If my impressions are correct then he'll see the fruits the Society has produced and won't want to destroy them. He'll want the Society to flourish even more.

But still, I don't want to keep my hopes up. God knows, we aren't out of the woods yet. The fires are still burning.
